MOVEMBER

$

This year UniLodge took part for the first time in Movember, smashing their set target and raising over $10,000 for men’s health issues.

The Rogue, The Scoundrel, The Casanova, The Party boy, The Bandit, The Trucker and The Box Car are just some of the entertaining names used to describe the many Moustaches donned by men during the month of November – better known as Movember.

By growing a Mo throughout the month of November men become known as a Mo Bro, as they are transformed into walking, talking billboards creating awareness for often ignored issues of men’s health everywhere they go.

The Movember idea was born in Melbourne, Australia by two mates and 10 years on Movember is a worldwide event with over three million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas having raising over $443 million to date.

At UniLodge we believe in giving and have a rich history of Corporate Social Responsibility, and with over 5,000 young men living in UniLodge properties around Australia and New Zealand we knew this was a fitting fundraiser for us to be a part of.

With this in mind UniLodge decided to part take for the very first time in Movember.

At the beginning of November a target of $10,000 was set and 19 eager and dedicated UniLodge staff members began their journey to grow a Mo.

These staff members set up a Mo page to gather donations and formed “Team UniLodge” that took part in the “Uni Challenge” which sees teams from different Universities & education providers compete to raise funds for Movember.

UniLodge finished in 3rd place out of 49 teams in the “Uni Challenge” and overshot their target by raising $10, 907.

Well done and a big congratulations to all that participated in this year’s Movember.

We would like to acknowledge the St George Bank & Rechter Theobald Owners Corporation who donated $500 each to the campaign and a tremendous THANK YOU to everyone else who donated.

Bring on Movember 2014 as we are only getting started!

Student Wedding

On the 1st November 2013, I had the pleasure of attending a traditional Indian engagement ceremony in Singapore for one of our past resident and colleagues, Alveer Singh. I have personally known Alveer since 2008 while he was studying Law at the ANU and living within one of our properties for over 5 years.
He also gained a role as a Casual Customer Service Coordinator for UniLodge working on our reception desk on weekends or when his demanding study requirements allowed. Alveer was one of our most active of residents, always involved in social and academic activities for the benefit of the entire community and was by far one of our most prominent Residential Advisors during his time with UniLodge. Since graduating, he is now an established lawyer working in Canberra.

I was excited and honoured to be invited to his special day as it was my first exposure to an international ceremony. The event was 9 hours long and had over 360 family and friends in attendance. The day and night was full of joyful bustle, traditions and good company. I was introduced to many elaborate Indian dance moves and some incredible food.

With a large alumni base coming from Singapore, this event also allowed me to catch with some of our ex-residents who currently are residing in Singapore for work or family, giving me a golden opportunity to renew old ties.

Are you coming to Australia to study in Semester 2? Why not visit The City of Melbourne’s Student Welcome Desk located in the international arrivals hall at Melbourne Airport.

Open early morning until late at night the Melbourne international Student Welcome Desk is a warm welcome and one-stop shop of information for students arriving in Melbourne.

Knowing the value of this initiative, UniLodge embraced the Melbourne Student Welcome Desk upon its inception, and have been proud sponsors each year.

Knowing the challenges for many arriving students, the Student Welcome Desk at Tullamarine Airport has been established to vastly improve the experience for new arrivals.  As safety and security of students is key to the UniLodge brand it made sense to be actively involved.

Manned by volunteers, many of whom are multilingual, the desk provides much needed information on transport options into the city, currency exchange facilities, city maps, safety and emergency information. Even luggage collection!

The desk provides students with a free welcome pack which contains information, tools and tips for getting started in Melbourne, as well as a guide to UniLodge in Melbourne.

The desk can be found at the International Arrivals Hall, Terminal 2, Melbourne Airport, operating from the 9th until to the 19th of July.  The desk will be open from 7am -3pm and 6pm to 11pm Monday to Saturday, with a later 8am start on Sundays.

Corporate Social Responsibility Program – UniLodge Supports Red Frogs

$

On Friday 24th July 2015, UniLodge hosted its first ever charity Art Auction to raise much needed funds for the Red Frogs Organisation, raising an amazing $11,500 on the evening! It was a pleasure to have Jackie Noller, ACT Red Frogs Coordinator, and Grant Gerkhe, The Red Frogs National Schoolies and Education Coordinator there to enjoy the evening and accept the donations on the night.

The Red Frogs organisation aims to change the party culture of schools and university students by educating students on making better decisions around alcohol and drugs, by providing alternative events such as coffee crawls, board game nights, pancake breakfasts as well as making parties a safe environment for young people by providing hydration stations with water, ice-poles, donuts and of course, red frogs lollies. UniLodge has been enlisting the help of The Red Frogs team for almost a decade now, and their help and experience has proven to be invaluable. UniLodge was keen to give back to such a fantastic organisation, which is run purely by volunteers and on donations from the community.

Over the past year, UniLodge @ ANU has been recruiting residents and ANU students to provide works of art on giant 48”x60” canvases. In total, 14 amateur artists contributed 15 pieces to showcase the night. All of these young student artists have had experience with The Red Frogs themselves through their life at university, and were keen to help out, as they know firsthand how much of a difference Red Frogs make. Lily Platts, who painted “The Journey,” took home the People’s Choice award and $1,000 prize.

The night itself saw over 120 attendees, including the artists and their guests, students, UniLodge staff, prominent members from the ANU Community and many suppliers and contractors that have a relationship with the UniLodge properties at the ANU. A special thank you to Diva Quartet for providing entertainment on the night and Dan Cooper, form LJ Hooker Tuggeranong who provided his auctioneering skills.

The night was a huge success, surpassing all our expectations by raising $11,500 for The Red Frogs! UniLodge was blown away with the support from our guests, and would like to thank all of those that bid on the artwork. Additionally, those that bid on the artwork have all been generous enough to donate the pieces back to UniLodge @ ANU for us to hang in our common areas and hallways for all our students to enjoy for many years to come. Based on the success of this event it could well become an annual event to raise valuable funds for many of the organisations associated with Unilodge that help our students and residents across Australia.

A big thank you to Peter Warrington, General Manager and Rebecca Sullivan, Residential Life Manager at UniLodge @ ANU. They both went above and beyond their roles to ensure this event was a huge success to the students, the community and Red Frogs.
